This is a good visual representation of what I was trying to convey here, in an earlier post. To be Black is to constantly be doing mental gymnastics and risk assessment calculations, to be certain that we aren’t “misunderstood” or seen as “suspicious” or “threatening” by some white person who doesn’t personally know us. We reflexively do these calculations almost every moment of the day in public around white people,
and most white people are completely oblivious to the dangers we face, and the dangers that their racial biases and ingrained stereotypes create for Black people. Especially darker skinned Black people.
